FAQs

This is the expected behavior if the air is clean, so be reassured that the purifier is doing a good job!

How to check that the sensor is reacting correctly?

  • Turn the fan off and apply some dust close to the sensor (by shaking dusty cloth next to the unit). You should see a peak in PM values after this action.
  • If nothing happens, try vacuum cleaning the sensor module filter and test again.
  • If you need any help, do not hesitate to contact the place where you bought the unit or Blueair directly.

The air quality data is stored in a secure networked called the cloud. The cloud is split into three different regions: Europe, mainland China, and all other countries.

You need to set up both your account and your unit in the region where you are using it.

If you set up your unit and account in a country and then move to a country of a different cloud region, you might experience connection issues. In this case, you will need to create a new account from your new location. Here is how to do it:

1. Delete the app and download it again from your current location.

2. Register as a new user in the Blueair Friend app with a new email address and password.

3. Check the inbox of the new email. Look for a “Thank you” message from the Blueair Friend app. If you can't see the email, please check your spam folder.

4. Click the link in the message and confirm the account (If you are in China, the link ends with '.cn', in Europe with '.eu', and in all other countries '.com or .ca').

5. Log out from the app and log in again.

6. Add the device.

The app notifies you every time the firmware in your device is being updated.

During the update, you must keep your air purifier connected to the Wi-Fi to have the firmware update complete. It is imperative you do not unplug the air purifier from the wall during any firmware updates.

The update should take a few minutes. Please do not disconnect your unit during the update!

If the update takes longer than a few minutes, your Wi-Fi signal might be a bit too weak at that time.

If so, unplug the Blueair device and plug it in again.

Then, go to your app and remove your device from the list (swipe left on the device).

Add your device in the Blueair Friend app again.

To get a better internet signal, you can try to place the device closer to the Wi-Fi router and ensure that the connection is not busy with other connected devices or downloads.

If you have access to a faster Wi-Fi network that supports 2.4 GHz, try to connect the device that that network.

If your air purifier is connected to wi-fi, you can control the light on your device in the app. For more information, please see the User Manual in our Customer Support section.

First few times you use your air purifier

As with any new device, an air purifier can release a ’newness’ smell. Don't worry, this odor is not dangerous or toxic! Run your air purifier non-stop for a few days and the odor should dissipate.

For optimal use, keep the air purifier on at all times. It uses less energy than a low-energy light bulb.

Time to change the filter?

A dirty filter can release a dusty smell. Filters absorb odors from, for example, cooking. To avoid this, always replace the filter when indicated.

On the filter, it says 'This side must face front'. Make sure that the text is facing the door of the unit. The door is the panel with the Blueair logo.

As our particulate matters (PM) sensors are very sensitive, high PM values can appear for many reasons: use of candles, smoke, cooking, incense, fireplace, smoking, cumulated dust, unfiltered vacuum cleaner, pollen, pets, etc. PM peaks are very common and normal, as long as they lower when the purifier is running.

In case of high PM2.5, we recommend you to set the highest speed of your air purifier temporarily and to ventilate the room.

If your PM values do not lower even after running your air purifier and ventilating, the reason for high PM might be that there is dust on the PM sensor.

After a big cleaning in your home or after unpacking your air purifier, some dust might have gotten stuck on the sensors, showing high PM values even though the air is pure.

You can get rid of potential dust on the sensors by simply vacuum cleaning the unit from the outside regularly. The sensors on air purifiers are located on the side of the unit or at the bottom, depending on the model. They are displayed by two arrays of holes.

The PM sensor of the Aware air quality monitor is located at the top of the device.

We recommend replacing the filters every 6 months approximately for best efficiency. Your unit will indicate you when it is time to change.

If you still think that your values are too high, contact us. We'll help you check that your device is used correctly.

Make sure that you have removed the plastic cover from the filter (not applicable to all models and filters).

Make sure that nothing blocks the air inlet and outlet.

Make sure that no object or dust is clogged around the filter. If there is, remove the filter and clean the purifier with a vacuum cleaner.

To remove the filter(s) to see if it is causing the noise:

  • Turn off your air purifier and unplug it.
  • Remove the filter(s).
  • Plug in the unit and turn it on. If the noise disappears, install a new filter. If the noise is still there, please contact the retailer where you bought the air purifier. They will help you according to their warranty conditions.

If you see this error message after registering your Blueair Friend account, it means that your account has already been confirmed. The link is no longer working. This can happen if you clicked twice on the link.

Try to log in to the app with your credentials. If you forgot your password or didn't set one, click 'Forgot Password?' on the login page.

Filter reset for Connected Classic series (Classic 200/400/500/600 series)

After 6 months of continual use, the filter replacement indicator will turn orange and you will be notified by the Blueair Friend app that it is time to replace the filter.

To reset the Classic series filter timer, switch on the unit and press and hold the filter replacement button for 10 seconds until the light disappears.

Filter reset for Blue series (Blue 121, 211, 211+, 411, etc.)

Turn on the unit and press and hold the main button for 10 seconds until the light disappears.

Filter reset for Sense, Sense+, Pro

When the red circle on the display is shown, it is time to replace the filter. To reset the filter timer, switch on the unit and hold your finger on the red circle until it disappears.

Filter reset for Classic E-series (models 270E, 450E, 550E, 650E, etc.)

To reset the filter timer, press and hold the RESET or TIMER button for 10 seconds. The filter timer light goes out and the counter starts counting again. To pause the filter timer light for five days, press the SNOOZE button.

The sensors measure

  • the concentration of Particulate Matters (PM2,5) in the air
  • the concentration of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in the air
  • the air temperature
  • the humidity in the air

Particulate Matters (PM2.5)

PM2.5 are air pollutants with a diameter of 2.5 microns (micrometers or µm) or less. They are also known as ‘fine particulate matter'. Common PM2.5 sources are car traffic, industrial plants, metal processing, cleaning fluids, beauty products, candles, cooking and smoking.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

VOCs are different organic chemicals, that are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. They include both human-made and natural chemical compounds. A total VOC (tVOC) sensor detects such gases and summarizes them into one level. No individual gas is tracked. Both harmful and harmless VOCs are detected.

Examples of families of substances that the VOC sensor detects:

  • Aldehydes (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein).
  • Hydrocarbons (toluene, benzene, undecane, xylene, naphthalene, butane, styrene, ethylbenzene, propane, kerosene).
  • Amines (ammonia derivatives), alcohols (ethanol etc), ketones (acetone, methylethylketone (MEK), butanone, butanedione).
  • Esters (butyl acetate).
  • Carbon monoxide, hydrogen, acrylamide, organic acids.

Common VOCs sources are building materials (paint and varnish), furniture, printers, cleaning products, air fresheners, laundry detergent, glue, paint, perfume, repellent, scented candles etc.

People and animals also release VOCs when they breathe, perspire or digest. These VOCs are not dangerous for humans if the room is properly ventilated. The Blueair filters are not designed to remove these VOCs. You easily get rid of them if you open the windows every day for 5-10 minutes.

A high tVOC value may result from a high level from one single compound or it may be a collection of low compound levels from a chemical ‘mix’. Our filters remove most of the VOCs that the sensors detect, but not all of them. If you get high VOCs that don't go down with ventilation, investigate the potential source of pollution. Check your app to spot the moment when the VOCs started to increase. Then try to relate it to an event that occurred at that time (new furniture, use of a fireplace, cooking, big cleaning)? If you need help to understand the values, please contact the place where you bought the unit or Blueair directly.

Air temperature and humidity

The sensors detect water stagnation, water damages, humid surfaces and warm environments. These factors can encourage the growth of mold, bacteria and allergens, such as house dust mites. The common recommendation of humidity is between 30-65%. VOCs tend to evaporate more with a higher temperature.

You can add as many devices as you want to your account.

During the initial pairing, both the unit and the smartphone must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

If your air purifier doesn’t switch on, try this:

  • Most Blueair models have a detachable plug that can slip out when you move the unit. Place the unit on its side and push the plug back into the socket at the bottom of the unit.
  • Make sure that the filter of your air purifier is correctly inserted and that the door of the air purifier is closed.
  • Unplug the unit from the electrical outlet and plug it back in again.-Plug the unit into another electrical outlet.
  • Check the power cord. If it is damaged in any way, unplug it immediately. Contact your local Blueair team to learn about getting a replacement or repair.
  • Make sure that you have selected a speed level to start cleaning the air.
  • If you are using a remote control, make sure that the battery is charged. If it isn’t, replace the battery.

What is Alexa and Amazon Echo?

Amazon Echo is a smart speaker you control with your voice via the artificial intelligent voice assistance Alexa. Blueair Aware, Sense+, and Classic units are now integrated into Amazon Echo and Alexa, so from now on, you can access and control your Blueair units only by the sound of your voice! Alexa can carry out tasks such as changing your Blueair unit’s settings or informing you about air quality and filter change status.

Where is Amazon Echo and Alexa available?

Amazon Echo is currently available in the United States and the United Kingdom.

What Alexa skills are supported by Aware?

The Amazon Echo is equipped with different ‘skills’ that make it possible for Alexa to ask connected devices to perform specific actions. Example of skills with Aware: what is the air quality? what is the particle level and what is the VOC concentration? what is the indoor temperature and how humid is it?

What Alexa skills are supported by Classic 205, 405, 505 or 605?

The Amazon Echo is equipped with different skills that make it possible for Alexa to ask connected devices to perform certain commands. Example of skills with Classics 05: Alexa, ask Classic 05 to increase/decrease the fan speed when I need to change the filter to activate/deactivate child lock to turn on/turn off the LED light to turn on/turn off the air purifier.

How do I set up my device to work with Amazon Echo/Alexa?

  • Add your Blueair device to your Blueair Friend account.
  • Download the Amazon Alexa app and create an account and connect your Amazon Echo.
  • In the Amazon Alexa app, enable the Blueair skills and link your account.
  • Start talking to your Blueair products via Amazon Echo.

Your air might be temporarily polluted.

Blueair's tVOC sensors are designed to react to most gases (tVOC = Total Volatile Organic Compounds). The concentration of the gases is summarized into air quality levels in the app. If you see high tVOCs levels, the air is probably temporarily polluted with gaseous pollutants. There can be many sources, such as perfume, new furniture, humidity, repellent, nail varnish, scented candle, disinfectant cleaner, laundry detergent, softener, paints, solvent, varnish, glue, dry-cleaned clothes, air fresheners, etc.

Also, the presence of humans and pets can provoke high tVOC levels (body odors and gasses), which is not harmful to your health. It only means that it is time to ventilate the room!

Here is what you can do to lower the VOC concentrations

Run your air purifier with a Smokestop filter (not suitable with all models of air purifiers).

Open the window and ventilate for at least ten minutes If you still think that your values are strangely high, contact us! We'll help you check that your device is set up correctly.

For Classic and Sense models

Your device has lost its Wi-Fi connection temporarily. If you haven’t changed any the Wi-Fi settings on your router, the device should be able to reconnect by itself within a few minutes.

If necessary, here is what you can try to reconnect the device:

  • If you changed a Wi-Fi setting on your router, you must update your app with these settings. Tap ‘+’ in the top right corner of the app and re-add your device.
  • Unplug and plug the router.
  • Make sure that VPN is off and that you are not using Firewalls (for more information about, check below the Wi-Fi network requirements: 'What Wi-Fi does Blueair smart products support?').
  • Place the device closer to the router.
  • Check if the Wi-Fi is busy with other devices.

What Wi-Fi does your Blueair product support?

  • 2.4 GHz standard Wi-Fi access point (b, g or n).
  • All standard signal encryptions: WEP, WPA, WPA2, TKIP, AES.
  • Un-encrypted wireless connections (i.e. Open) Please note: Professional versions of the protocols which require a certificate is not supported. This can be the case for company networks.
  • Captive portals (when username and/or password are required) are not supported.
  • Access points that broadcastsmultiple SSIDs networks or on multiple channels simultaneously may create problems of data packets being lost. This is especially the case in pairing products to the app.
  • Make sure that no firewall blocks outgoing connections (blocking inbound connections is OK) or any restrictions on protocols such as http/https or sockets.

For Cabin air purifiers

  • Check Bluetooth connection is activated.
  • Check that your Cabin air purifier is connected to the 12V outlet and turned on.

To use auto mode, your air purifier must have built-in sensors, or be connected to the Blueair Aware standalone air quality monitor. Check the user manual for your air purifier in our Customer Support section. Your air purifier model is shown on a label at the bottom of your unit.

If your air purifier has built-in sensors, start auto mode manually by pressing the auto mode button on the unit display. On Classic units, you find the display under the lid on the top of the unit. If your air purifier is connected to the app, start auto mode from the fan control screen: Fan speed 0 -> 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> auto mode.

If your air purifier doesn't have built-in sensors, and you use an Aware air quality monitor, set the auto mode from the app. The air purifier and the Aware must be paired.

To pair your air purifier and the Aware:

1. Log in to your Blueair Friend app and tap the air purifier in the device list.

2. Select the linking symbol.

3. Select the Aware monitor you want to link to your air purifier:

  • If you have already added a Blueair Aware air quality monitor to your account, select the Aware from the list of available devices.
  • If you haven’t yet added the Aware to your account, select Add Blueair Aware and follow the steps in the app. When the Aware is added, select the Aware from the list of available devices.

4. A pop-up in the app asks if you want to activate auto mode directly. You can accept and enable the auto mode immediately, or at any time from the fan control screen: Fan speed 0 -> 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> auto mode.

Auto mode is triggered by the level of particles (PM) and/or gases (tVOC). The trigger options depend on your filter type:

Particle filter: Auto mode is only triggered from Particles values. SmokeStop™ filter (combined filter with Carbon): Auto mode can be triggered from Particles values or both Particles and gases values.

You set the auto mode trigger(s) in the device information screen in the Blueair Friend app.

Classic

1. Unplug the Blueair Classic unit and plug it back again.

2. Set the unit to manual mode:

a. Open the flip top lid and press the Wi-Fi symbol on the display for three seconds.

b. Wait until the Wi-Fi symbol is blinking and press it again for three seconds.

When the Wi-Fi symbol is pulsing, the Blueair Classic is in manual mode.

3. On your smartphone, navigate to 'Wi-Fi settings'. Wait for the network 'classic-config' to show. Connect to it.

4. Return to the Blueair Friend app and follow the guided process.

5. When the app asks you to connect your Blueair Classic to a Wi-Fi network, fill in the name and password of the Wi-Fi network that you want to connect your Blueair Classic to.

When the LED light is solid, your Blueair Classic is connected to your Wi-Fi network. The temporary Blueair classic-config network is automatically terminated. Your smartphone automatically connects to your usual Wi-Fi network.

Aware

1. Set Blueair Aware to manual mode:

a. Hold your Aware upside down until the LED bar starts blinking blue from one side to the other.

b. Turn the device upright again and wait for ten seconds.

c. Turn your Aware upside down a second time. Hold it until the LED bar starts blinking orange from one side to the other.

d. Turn your Aware upright again. Blueair Aware is now in manual mode.

2. On your smartphone, navigate to 'Wi-Fi settings'. Wait for the network named 'Aware-Config' to show. Connect to it.

3. Return to the Blueair Friend app and restart the connection process by adding a new device. Skip step 1 and 2 in the app instructions.

4. When the app asks you to connect your Blueair Aware to a Wi-Fi network, fill in the name and password of the Wi-Fi network that you want to connect your Blueair Aware to.

When the LED is solid blue, your Blueair Aware air monitor is connected to your Wi-Fi network. The temporary aware-config network is automatically terminated. Your smartphone automatically connects to your usual Wi-Fi network.

Sense+

1. Unplug Blueair Sense+ and plug it back again. Sweep your hand over the top display to activate it.

2. Set the device to manual mode:

a. Press the area below the Wi-Fi symbol for 3 seconds (inside a circle, if you see it). Wait until the Wi-Fi symbol is blinking.

b. Press the same place again for 3 seconds.

When the Wi-Fi symbol is pulsing, Blueair Sense+ is in manual mode.

3. On your smartphone, navigate to 'Wi-Fi settings': Wait for the network named "Sense-Config" to show. Connect to it.

4. Return to the Blueair Friend app and restart the connection process by adding a new device.

Skip step 1 and 2 in the app instructions.

5. When the app asks you to connect your Blueair Sense+ to a Wi-Fi network, fill in the name and password of the Wi-Fi network that you want to connect your Blueair Sense+ to.

When the Wi-Fi symbol on the top display is solid, your Blueair Sense+ is connected to your Wi-Fi network. The temporary Blueair sense-config network is automatically terminated. Your smartphone automatically connects to your usual Wi-Fi network.

Low tVOCs levels can occur for various reasons:

  • You actually have low tVOC levels in the air.
  • Your device has recently been restarted (unplugged or after a power cut). In this case, the sensors need a little time to re-adapt. This can take up to one week.
  • Your device has been turned on and off in environments with different humidity and temperature. If so, the sensor needs a bit of time to re-adapt. This can take up to one week.
Open the app. In the list of devices, swipe left on the device you wish to remove, and press ‘Remove’.
If the night mode is not working, the time zone settings in your mobile phone might be incorrect. Go to the Settings menu in your phone and set the time zone so that it corresponds to your current location.

Classic

1. Unplug the Blueair Classic unit and plug it back again.

2. Set the unit to manual mode:

a. Open the flip top lid and press the Wi-Fi symbol on the display for three seconds.

b. Wait until the Wi-Fi symbol is blinking and press it again for three seconds.

When the Wi-Fi symbol is pulsing, the Blueair Classic is in manual mode.

3. On your smartphone, navigate to 'Wi-Fi settings'. Wait for the network 'classic-config' to show. Connect to it.

4. Return to the Blueair Friend app and follow the guided process.

5. When the app asks you to connect your Blueair Classic to a Wi-Fi network, fill in the name and password of the Wi-Fi network that you want to connect your Blueair Classic to.

When the LED light is solid, your Blueair Classic is connected to your Wi-Fi network. The temporary Blueair classic-config network is automatically terminated. Your smartphone automatically connects to your usual Wi-Fi network.

 

The following connections are supported:

2.4 GHz standard Wi-Fi access point (b, g or n).

All standard signal encryptions: WEP, WPA, WPA2, TKIP, AES.

Un-encrypted wireless connections (i.e. Open) Please note: Professional versions of the protocols which require a certificate is not supported. This can be the case for company networks.

Captive portals (when username and/or password are required) are not supported.

Access points that broadcast multiple SSIDs networks or on multiple channels simultaneously may create problems of data packets being lost. This is especially the case in pairing products to the app.

Make sure that no firewall blocks outgoing connections (blocking inbound connections is OK) or any restrictions on protocols such as http/https or sockets.

The most common explanation is that your device was connected to another account.

The device can only be connected to one account at a time, so we recommend you to have only one account per household.

Another reason can be that the device has been moved to a place with another Wi-Fi network.

To reconnect your device, open your app, select '+' in the top corner and follow the instructions on screen.

Your device has lost its Wi-Fi connection temporarily.

If you haven’t changed any the Wi-Fi settings on your router, the device should be able to reconnect by itself within a few minutes.

If necessary, try the following troubleshooting tips to reconnect the device:

  • If you changed a Wi-Fi setting on your router, you must update your app with these settings. Tap ‘+’ in the top right corner of the app and re-add your device.
  • Unplug and plug the router.
  • Make sure that VPN is off and that you are not using Firewalls (for more information about, check below the Wi-Fi network requirements: 'What Wi-Fi does Blueair smart products support?').
  • Place the device closer to the router.
  • Check to see if the Wi-Fi is busy with other devices.

Make sure that no firewall blocks outgoing connections (blocking inbound connections is OK) or any restrictions on protocols such as http/https or sockets.

Blueair recommends a filter change every six months. The light on your filter timer will indicate when it is time to replace your filter after six months of continual use.

If you use your unit in a highly polluted environment, you need to change it more often. To ensure the unit’s high-quality performance, we recommend that you only use genuine Blueair filters.

Blueair filters cannot be cleaned or washed. They need to be replaced every 6 months. Please check your user manual to see replacement indications for your model. All user manuals can be found in our Customer Support section.

Blueair pre-filters can be vacuumed or cleaned with your laundry (30 or 40 degrees maximum). The pre-filter is the colored textile filter that you place on the outside of your unit (only available for the Blue Pure series).

For Classic and Sense

You can add as many devices as you want to your account.

During the initial pairing, both the unit and the smartphone must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

For Cabin air purifiers

Yes - you can connect with several accounts, but you can only have one Bluetooth connection at a time.

Products without sensors can be moved between different rooms or locations.

You can move also products with sensors, but keep in mind that air quality readings will be less accurate at the beginning in the new location. The high-tech sensors calibrate automatically over time, learning to read the room. So the readings become more and more accurate the longer the sensors stay in one place.

For continuous and efficient air cleaning and air monitoring, our recommendation is to leave the air purifier on 24/7 in the room where you want to clean the air.

Note: After the learning period, when you plug in again the Aware air monitor to an electrical outlet, it takes around three hours before it shows relevant values.

If you change the location of your Aware to an area with a different Wi-Fi network, you must re-do the pairing of the product with the app. Select ‘+’ in the app and follow the instructions.

To turn off the Wi-Fi function, press the Wi-Fi and filter buttons simultaneously for more than three seconds. To turn on the Wi-Fi function again, press only the Wi-Fi button for more than three seconds.

If you are using an air purifier with sensors, you have the option to set the purifier on auto mode, via the app or on the unit directly, to trigger the airflow speeds automatically according to pollution levels.

If your air purifier automatically runs on the highest speed level, it means that the concentration of VOCs and/or particles in the room have increased and requires faster air cleaning. You can choose via the app if you want the auto mode to trigger on particle levels or particle and gas levels (Tap the information details (‘i’)).

Your air purifier should gradually lower the airflow speed as soon as the air in the room is clean again.

What does it mean if the air purifier continues running on high speed?

Most of the time, it means that some dust is clogged on the filter or on the sensors. Here is what you can do:

  • Make sure you have replaced the filter in the last 6 months.
  • Make sure that the auto mode settings in the app are adapted to your type of filter (if you are using a Particle filter, the auto mode trigger in the app should be set to ‘Particles’ only. If you are using a carbon filter, the auto mode trigger should be set on both ‘Particles' and 'Gases’).
  • Check that no dust or any item is blocking the inlet and outlet grids of the air purifier. Vacuum the air purifier from the outside. Don’t forget to vacuum where the sensors are located. The sensors are two circular arrays of holes on the side or at the bottom of the unit.
  • Open a window and air out the room. If high levels of VOC (gases) are causing the full speed, the room might be filled with a gas which cannot be removed by the air purifier (tVOC sensors can sense thousands of different gases, including harmless ones which cannot all be removed by the air purifiers).
  • If auto mode and child lock are activated, deactivate them from the app. Try to change the fan speed from the app or manually.
  • If you are using an air purifier from E-series (models 270E, 450E, 550E, 650E etc.).
  • Use a can of compressed air (like the one you use for keyboards) to clean the sensor area. From the outside, give the sensor area a couple of 3 seconds blasts.
  • The sensors are two circular arrays of holes on the side of the LED display, one will be arranged like a flower; the other, a circle.
  • If cleaning the sensor area doesn't help, reset the software on your air purifier. This resets the filter timer and the sensor: link to how to reset the E-series settings.

If you need any help, do not hesitate to contact the place where you bought the unit or Blueair directly.

  • Place your Blueair device and your phone in the same room as the router.
  • Ensure that the Wi-Fi is functioning (turn off/on Wi-Fi from your phone).
  • Make sure that the Wi-Fi signal is strong from your phone.
  • Make sure your Wi-Fi is not busy with many other connected devices or downloads.
  • Reboot the router and try to connect your Blueair device to the Wi-Fi again.

If you’ve tried all those approaches and you are still having connectivity issues, try to connect your Blueair device to your phone’s private internet connection (hotspot). Go to the settings of your phone, activate the hotspot. Then go to the Blueair app add your device.

Some deviation between the sensors is normal as every sensor is different.

Many factors need to be considered, such as the airflow intake, uniqueness of each sensor, calibration effects, the historical diagrams of your app (depending on when you have refreshed the page).

Every sensor can have slight performance variations, and put together they deliver a slightly different output figure.
