Blueair Turns to New Zealand Sheep Farms to create an electrostatic wool filter For the next evolution in clean air technology, Blueair has turned to one of the first animals mankind domesticated more than 10,000 years ago – the sheep.

Crystallized at Blueair headquarters in Sweden this summer, Blueair partnered with Auckland, New Zealand-based filter media producer Lanaco to develop an industry first – a high-performance wool based electrostatic filter specifically for our air purifier units. Lanaco has created high-performance filter media using wool and plant-based materials that meet Blueair’s high standards. Wool filter technology from Lanaco is proven to work effectively in the toughest environments, even travelling aboard NASA’s Artemis trips to the moon and back as part of the vehicle’s emergency air protection systems.

Now, Blueair will deploy wool-based filters here on earth as part of our ongoing mission to provide clean air for the next generation. Building on the unique Astino® sheep-breeding program and materials research Lanaco has undertaken together with local partners and New Zealand sheep farmers, Lanaco will provide the media for the filters, which Blueair will make for select models by the end of 2024.

Lanaco’s filters for Blueair air purifiers are USDA Certified Biobased and offer notable performance advantages.

Lanaco’s process enhances wool’s properties to create its “EcoStatic®” electrostatic filter whose positive and negative fiber surface charges attract and retain particulate matter. The non-woven wool’s porous structure allows EcoStatic® filters to capture dust while allowing air to continue to flow through. How is this different than traditional filters?

• Lanaco’s wool fiber structure provides ultra-low air resistance, meaning air can flow through it easily with high air permeability and low pressure drop. In fact, it demonstrates good air filtration performance for both particles and a measurable reduction in chemical gases.
• Wool is naturally hydrophobic, which prevents water from building up and clogging the filter media and is fire resistant.

Our goal is to have all our filter media to align with global regulatory and consumer trends, broadly encompassed by UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) guidelines. Using EcoStatic in our filters will firmly put us on a pathway to achieving our goal.
